Fatherless: The five daughters whose 51-year-old volunteer dad became Britain's oldest casualty in Afghanistan or Iraq

As he volunteered to fight in Afghanistan, Senior Aircraftman Gary Thompson had a clear mission in mind.

He wanted to give the young women of the war-torn nation the same opportunities that his beloved five daughters had.

Last night, tributes poured in for the 51-year-old RAF reservist, who died trying to improve the lot of those less fortunate than his family.
